Have been the Sunday/Projects guy about 18 months. Am part of a transformation process right now. We're basically trying to figure out how to shift the newsroom into a "new" design that a.looks at the Web as the highest-need, most-urgent platform b. keeps the newspaper in mind and c. figures out a way to use multi-functions and cross-training to maximize our shrinking newroom. None of it's fun.
Share your thoughts about how the newsroom of the future should be different . (And if you do, please post a copy of your answer in the forums).
In the newsroom of the future, the building - the mother ship - becomes merely a production center for the tree product. It becomes mostly irrelevant in day-to-day newsgathering. Only in a crisis would you want everyone around you. Otherwise, it's easier to deal with newsgatherers as they work in the field. You'll also find a place that uses bloggers and freelancers a helluva lot. The old model of a fixed, fat staff is dying, if not dead. Sad for us oldtimers, but true.
