I work at the N&O, the newspaper serving the Triangle region of North Carolina. At the N&O, I oversee the newsroom's operations at newsobserver.com as well as our community publishing site, triangle.com. I have a B.S. in business administration from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., and a M.A. in journalism from the University of Maryland at College Park. I have worked at the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk and the Baltimore Sun. I came to the N&O in 1996 as business editor. And, as you can see above, my daughter just graduated from UNC. I thought this would be appropriate to put on a Dookie site.
Share your thoughts about how the newsroom of the future should be different . (And if you do, please post a copy of your answer in the forums).
Running a newsroom in the future will be complicated and it will be harder. We operate now in an environment where people have the ability to get news and information from many sources, obviously. They will gravitate to news outlets that provide content they can trust, content that is verified.
Much of the content on the web is not reliable. Some of it is. Established news organizations have a brand that is based on this process of verification and a reputation for independence.
What we need to do is make sure that we can deliver this content across the multiple platforms that news consumers want to use, when they want the content.
We also need to make a place in our process for interactivity and networking. Because news consumers can also produce content, we need to find ways to harness this user-generated content. This is an opportunity. Facebook is a social utility, but is it a reliable source of information about your geographic community? Not yet. Google is great at search, but does Google generate original content. Not yet.
We still have room in the news and information niche if we leverage what we do well with new tools and new technology.
