Transcribed by Blake White from John Gering’s session: Real Estate’s Impact on Newsroom Design
1. Know your goal, because the business goal drives the design.
2. Depending on the goal, there are certain advantages (and disadvantages) to centralized and/or de-centralized layouts.
Then, whether centralized or decentralized, the design of a facility might be vertical or horizontal in layout and workflow.
i. NBC Rockefeller Center was shown as an example of vertical design
ii. 20th Century Fox’s lot in LA was shown as an example of horizontal design
3. In the specific case of college newsrooms (which may be mainly based on newspapers), work spaces need to attract volunteers, like non-profit organizations that are integral parts of their own communities. They should be welcoming, friendly, “places to be,” but they should also seek to preserve the unique culture and history.
4. The environment should be flexible enough to minimize constraints on future workflows.
5. Newsrooms should seek to get closer to a critical mass of the people they serve. This also fosters brand identity.
